Fort Sumter
The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. In 1861, the south fired upona federal fort and the civil war began. The leaders of Fort Sumter were P.G.T Beauregard and Robert Anderson. The battle of Fort Sumter took place in Charleston, South Carolina.
Antietam
It was in 1862 and it was one of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. There were more American deaths than any other one day battle. It was also the victory that Lincoln needed to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. The leaders were Robert E. Lee and George Briton McClellan. The battle of Antietam took place in Maryland and Sharpsburg.
Vicksburg
During the time of 1863, the result of winning the battle, the Union gained control of the Mississippi River. It also gave them the cut of Western Confederate state off from the rest of the south. The battle of the Vicksburg was in Mississippi. The people in charge were John C. Pemberton and Ulysses S. Grant.
Sherman's March and Atlanta
General William T. Sherman led about 60,000 soldiers on a 285 mile march from Atlanta to Savannah. The purpose of the march was to frighten the civilian population of Georgia to abandon the Confederate cause. Gerneral William took food and then burned it to the ground before marching to sea.
Gettyburg
The Battle of Gettysburg, fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863, is considered the most important engagement of the American Civil War. On July 1, the advancing Confederates clashed with the Union’s Army of the Potomac, commanded by General George G. Meade, at the crossroads town of Gettysburg. It was also the turing point of the Civil War.
